چکیده
Cooling of hadron beams is critically important in the next generation storage rings for delivery unprecedented performance. One such application electron-ion collider presently under development US. The desire to develop electron coolers operation at much higher energies than previously achieved necessitates use radio-frequency (rf) fields acceleration as opposed conventional, electrostatic approach. While cooling a mature technology low energy utilizing dc beam, rf requires beam be bunched, thus extending parameter space an unexplored territory. It experimentally demonstrate feasibility with bunches and further investigate how relative time structure two affects properties; thus, set four pulsed-beam experiments was carried out by collaboration Jefferson Lab Institute Modern Physics (IMP). have successfully demonstrated both longitudinal transverse directions first time. We measured effect bunch length ion focusing strength on temporal evolution profile that if synchronization can accurately maintained, dynamics are not adversely affected change structure.13 MoreReceived 17 July 2020Accepted 18 November 2020DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevAccelBeams.24.012801Published American Physical Society terms Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. A pulsed, 20 kv electron beam is focussed upon a vapor-deposited thermocouple, and the resulting temperature vs. time response is studied. The experimental data show much scatter, but are consistent with the theoretical prediction that the characteristic thermal response time T is proportional to d , where d is the beam diameter at the thermocouple. From these data, for the soft-glass substrate...
متن کاملA Pulsed Electron Source for the HITRAP Cooler Trap
The HITRAP Cooler Trap will store highly charged ions and cool them to a temperature of 4 K for delivery to precision experiments [1]. The trap is preceded by a decelerator complex able to slow ion bunches delivered by the ESR from a specific kinetic energy of 4 MeV/u down to 6 keV/u [2]. The Cooler Trap is designed as a 23-ring cylindrical Penning trap, providing the ability to simultaneously ...
متن کاملExperimental demonstration of relativistic electron cooling.
We report on an experimental demonstration of electron cooling of high-energy antiprotons circulating in a storage ring. In our experiments, electron cooling, a well-established method at low energies (<500 MeV/nucleon), was carried out in a new region of beam parameters, requiring a multi-MeV dc electron beam and an unusual beam transport line. In this Letter, we present the results of the lon...
